A QUESTION

OF LOVE

ABOUT

A Question of Love is a staged concert which explores the relationships between queerness, spirituality, and organized religion. Premiered on November 3rd, 2019 at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston, A Question of Love was curated and performed by mezzo-soprano Hailey McAvoy, baritone Brad Testerman, and pianist Bethany Pietroniro.

The concert, featuring a diverse array of American songs with texts ranging from Latin psalms to the lyrics of Cole Porter, presents a variety of perspectives surrounding queer culture, religious tradition, and the intersection of the two. The composers on the program span from Samuel Barber (1910-1981) to contemporary composers Gilda Lyons and Michael Lewis, to original songs and arrangements by Testerman, McAvoy, and Pietroniro. All of these come together to trace a journey beginning in faith and traveling though questioning, recognition, grief, anger, and ultimate hope for healing.
